Heat pumps are everywhere in Austin, from newer builds in Leander and Pflugerville to all-electric homes in Sun City. The same system cools your home all summer and heats it in winter, so it works almost year-round and wears harder than a furnace that only runs a few weeks a year.
Kassa Kool is engineer-owned. We measure refrigerant pressures, temperatures, defrost operation and electrical readings instead of guessing, then fix what's actually broken. We service central heat pumps, dual-fuel systems with a gas furnace backup, and ductless mini-splits.
In heat mode, air from the vents feels warm but not hot, cooler than a gas furnace. On cold mornings, the outdoor unit may frost over, then switch into defrost for a few minutes with a whoosh and some steam. Both are normal. Solid ice that doesn't clear, or air that feels cold, is not.
A failed defrost control board, sensor or relay lets ice build up until the outdoor coil can't move heat. We test the defrost cycle and replace the part that's failing.
The reversing valve switches the system between heating and cooling. When it sticks or its coil fails, the heat pump runs in only one mode or blows the wrong temperature air.
A heat pump doesn't use up refrigerant. If it's low, there's a leak, and a low charge hurts heating and cooling. We find and repair the leak instead of just topping it off.
These parts take a beating from Texas heat and year-round use. A weak capacitor or worn contactor can keep the compressor or outdoor fan from starting.
Electric heat strips in the air handler help on the coldest days. Burned-out elements, failed sequencers or tripped limits leave you without backup heat when you need it most.
Heat pumps need a thermostat set up for heat pump operation. Wrong settings, a bad wire or a failed mini-split board can make a healthy system act broken.
Never chip ice off the outdoor coil or pour hot water on it. That can damage the coil. If the ice doesn't clear on its own, turn the system off and call us.
Because a heat pump runs most of the year in Austin, an older one can reach the point where repairs stop making sense sooner than a furnace would. We'll give you a straight answer based on its age, condition and repair cost. If replacement is the better value, see heat pump and AC replacement and financing and rebates.
A heat pump needs care in both seasons. Our maintenance plan covers a spring cooling tune-up and a fall heating tune-up for $16.67 a month, with priority scheduling and 10% off repairs. Mini-split plans are available too.
How much does heat pump repair cost in Austin?
It depends on what failed. Parts like a capacitor, contactor or defrost sensor are usually affordable, while a reversing valve or compressor costs more. We charge a trip and diagnostic fee, which can be waived for certain repairs, and you get a firm price before any work begins.
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?
Heat pump air always feels cooler than furnace air, but if it's truly cold, common causes are a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a defrost problem or a thermostat setting. Check that the thermostat is set to Heat, then call us if it doesn't improve.
Is it normal for my heat pump to have ice on it?
Light frost on cold mornings is normal, and the unit should clear it with a short defrost cycle. A thick block of ice that stays for hours means the defrost system or airflow needs attention.
What is emergency heat, and should I use it?
Emergency heat runs only the backup electric heat strips and skips the outdoor unit. It's meant for when the heat pump itself has failed. It keeps you warm but costs much more to run, so call us to get the heat pump fixed.
Do you repair ductless mini-splits?
Yes. We repair ductless mini-splits from major brands, including Mitsubishi, and offer mini-split maintenance plans.
