The evaporator coil is the indoor half of your air conditioner. It sits on top of the furnace or air handler, usually in the attic in Austin homes, and pulls heat and humidity out of the air before it goes back into your rooms. When it leaks, the whole system loses refrigerant and stops cooling.
Kassa Kool is engineer-owned, and we don't replace parts on a guess. We locate the leak first, then explain your options: a coil replacement, a repair if one is possible, or a new system if that's the better value.
An air conditioner doesn't use up refrigerant. If yours needs it again and again, there's a leak, and the evaporator coil is one of the most common places to find one. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak only buys time.
Chemicals in household air, from cleaners, paints, adhesives and building materials, slowly eat tiny pinholes into copper tubing. These leaks are often too small to see and spread across the coil.
Austin air conditioners run eight to sixteen hours a day for much of the year. Years of heating, cooling and condensation wear the coil down.
Brazed joints and return bends can crack from vibration over time, especially where the tubing was stressed during installation.
A dirty coil or weak airflow can make the coil freeze over and over, which stresses the metal and the drain system. Regular filter changes and maintenance help prevent it.
We use electronic leak detection and, when needed, isolate and pressure-test the coil with nitrogen. You see what we find before you decide anything.
Sometimes. A leak at an accessible joint can often be brazed. Corrosion leaks spread across the coil usually can't be fixed reliably, and we generally don't recommend leak sealants because they can clog other parts of the system.
Many coils are still covered by the manufacturer's parts warranty. We check your model and serial numbers and handle the warranty paperwork if yours qualifies.
If your system is fairly new, a coil replacement is usually the smart move, especially under warranty. If it's 12 or more years old, uses R-22 refrigerant or has other problems, putting the money toward a new, more efficient system may be the better value. We'll show you both numbers. See AC replacement and financing.
Clean filters and regular tune-ups keep coils from freezing and catch small leaks early. Our maintenance plan includes spring and fall visits for $16.67 a month, plus 10% off repairs.
How much does evaporator coil replacement cost in Austin?
It depends on the coil size, refrigerant type, how hard the unit is to reach in your attic, and whether the coil is under warranty. You get a firm written price before any work begins.
Is my evaporator coil covered by warranty?
Often, if your system is newer and was registered. Parts warranties usually cover the coil itself but not the labor to replace it. We check your model and serial numbers and tell you what's covered.
How long does a coil replacement take?
Most coil replacements are done in one day once the part is in hand. Some coils, especially warranty parts, take a few days to arrive.
Can you just add refrigerant instead?
We can add refrigerant to get you cooling for now, but if the coil is leaking, it will run low again. Fixing the leak is the only lasting fix.
Should I replace the outdoor unit too?
Not always. If the outdoor unit is newer and healthy, a matched coil replacement is fine. If it's old or uses R-22, replacing both together usually makes more sense.
