Austin doesn't get many hard freezes, but when one hits, a furnace that won't start turns into an emergency fast. Most heating systems here sit unused for much of the year, so problems often show up on the first cold night of the season.
Kassa Kool is engineer-owned. We test ignition, gas pressure, flame sensors, safety switches and electrical readings instead of guessing, then repair what's actually broken. We work on gas furnaces, electric furnaces, heat strips and heat pumps from all major brands.
Get everyone outside right away. Don't flip light switches or use anything that could spark. From outside, call Texas Gas Service or 911. Once everyone is safe, call us and we'll find and fix the problem.
A flame sensor coated with residue makes the furnace light and then shut off within seconds. Cleaning or replacing it is one of the most common winter repairs.
Hot surface igniters crack with age. When one fails, the furnace runs its inducer fan and tries to start, but the burners never light.
A blocked vent, a cracked hose or a weak inducer motor trips the pressure switch and keeps the furnace from lighting. We find the cause instead of bypassing the safety.
The same blower moves air for heating and cooling. A weak motor or capacitor means poor airflow, short cycling and rooms that never warm up.
Many Austin homes heat with a heat pump and backup electric heat strips. Burned-out strips, a failed sequencer or a heat pump stuck in defrost all leave you cold.
Dead batteries, settings lost after a power outage and loose low-voltage wires cause more no-heat calls than you'd think. We check these first.
Never bypass a safety switch or work on gas lines or wiring inside a furnace. If these checks don't fix it, turn the system off and call us.
Furnaces in Austin often last a long time because they run so little each year, so a repair is usually the smart choice. We recommend replacement only when there's a safety problem that can't be fixed, such as a cracked heat exchanger, or when the repair cost doesn't make sense for the system's age. If it comes to that, see AC and heating replacement and financing options.
Our maintenance plan includes a fall heating tune-up and a spring AC tune-up for $16.67 a month, plus priority scheduling and 10% off repairs.
How much does furnace repair cost in Austin?
It depends on what failed. Common repairs like a flame sensor, igniter or capacitor are usually affordable. We charge a trip and diagnostic fee, which can be waived for certain repairs, and you get a firm price before any work begins.
Why does my furnace turn on and then shut off?
Most often it's a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter, or a venting or pressure switch problem. These are safety shutoffs, so the furnace is protecting itself. We find the cause and fix it properly.
Is a burning smell from my furnace normal?
A dusty smell for the first few minutes of the season is normal. A smell that lingers, smells electrical or smells like rotten eggs is not. If you smell gas, leave the house and call Texas Gas Service or 911 from outside.
Do you repair heat pumps and electric heat?
Yes. We repair gas furnaces, electric furnaces, heat strips and heat pumps, including ductless mini-splits, from all major brands.
Can you come after hours?
Our regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and after-hours visits are available by appointment. Maintenance plan members get priority scheduling.
