The compressor sits inside the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant through the whole system. When it fails, your AC or heat pump can't cool or heat at all. It's also the most expensive part of the system, so getting the diagnosis right matters.
Plenty of “dead compressors” turn out to be a failed capacitor, contactor or wiring problem that costs a fraction as much to fix. Kassa Kool is engineer-owned, and we test the compressor and its electrical parts before recommending a replacement.
Ask whether the capacitor, contactor and wiring were tested first, and how the compressor itself was tested. A proper diagnosis checks the windings, the amp draw and the insulation, not just whether the unit hums.
Dirty outdoor coils, blocked airflow and 100°F afternoons make compressors run hot. Heat breaks down the oil and the motor windings over time.
Too little refrigerant starves the compressor of cooling, and too much can send liquid back into it. Both shorten its life. Charging by measurement prevents this.
A weak capacitor, pitted contactor or loose connection makes the compressor struggle every time it starts, which wears it out early.
Many compressor failures we see trace back to years without a tune-up: dirty coils, a failing capacitor nobody caught, or a slow leak left unchecked.
Compressors in Austin run long hours for most of the year. On an older system, a failed compressor is often a sign the rest of the system is near the end too.
We check the capacitor, contactor and wiring first, then test the compressor windings, amp draw and insulation resistance. You get the readings and a clear explanation before you decide.
Many manufacturers cover compressors with a long parts warranty on registered systems. We check your model and serial numbers and handle the claim if yours qualifies. Labor is usually not covered by the manufacturer.
A compressor replacement usually makes sense when the system is fairly new and the compressor is still under warranty. If the system is out of warranty, 12 or more years old or uses R-22 refrigerant, a new high-efficiency system often costs only a bit more and comes with a new warranty. We'll show you both. See AC replacement and 0% financing.
Clean coils, a healthy capacitor and the right refrigerant charge are what keep a compressor alive. Our maintenance plan checks all three twice a year for $16.67 a month, plus 10% off repairs.
How much does AC compressor replacement cost in Austin?
It depends on the system size, refrigerant type and whether the compressor is under warranty. Because it's a major repair, we always price it next to a new system so you can compare. You get a firm written price before any work begins.
Is it worth replacing just the compressor?
Often yes on a newer system, especially under warranty. On an older system, a new AC or heat pump is usually the better long-term value. We'll give you a straight answer based on your system.
My AC hums but won't start. Is the compressor dead?
Not necessarily. A failed capacitor or contactor causes the same symptoms and is a much smaller repair. Turn the system off to protect the compressor and call us for a diagnosis.
How long does a compressor replacement take?
Most are finished in one day once the compressor is in hand. Warranty parts can take a few days to arrive.
Do you replace compressors on heat pumps too?
Yes. We replace compressors on central air conditioners and heat pumps from all major brands.
