A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that heats and cools a space without any ductwork. An outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units through a small bundle of refrigerant line, wiring and condensate drain that passes through a small hole in the wall. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so every room or zone can be set to exactly the temperature you want.
In Austin, that makes mini-splits a good answer to problems that ducted systems struggle with: a converted garage, an addition, a bonus room over the garage, or a room at the end of a long attic duct run that never feels right. If you're not sure why one room is always hotter or colder than the rest, our article on why some rooms are hotter or colder than others is a good place to start.
Kassa Kool is engineer-owned. We size mini-split systems with a Manual J load calculation instead of guessing, because a system that's too big or too small never keeps a room comfortable. We install, repair and maintain single-zone and multi-zone ductless systems.
Sometimes, but not always. One mini-split usually serves a room or an open area. For a whole home, a multi-zone system or a ducted heat pump may be the better fit. We'll compare the options honestly, including when a mini-split isn't the best choice.
Each indoor unit is controlled separately, so you can heat or cool only the rooms you're using and set each one to its own temperature.
Austin attics regularly pass 130°F, and ducts that run through them can leak or lose a lot of the air you've paid to cool. A ductless system delivers air straight into the room.
Inverter-driven mini-splits adjust their speed instead of switching fully on and off. They tend to hold temperature more evenly and run longer at lower speeds, which also helps pull moisture out of the air.
Because a mini-split is a heat pump, it heats as well as cools. That makes it a good fit for Central Texas winters, and a useful way to add heat to a room without running new gas lines or ducts.
Indoor units come in wall-mounted, ceiling and floor-mounted styles, and installation takes only a small opening in the wall rather than a full duct system.
We repair ductless mini-splits from major brands, including Mitsubishi. Common problems we see:
Mini-splits need regular care to stay efficient: the filters need cleaning often, and the coil, blower and drain line should be checked at least once a year. Our maintenance plan covers a spring cooling tune-up and a fall heating tune-up for $16.67 a month, and mini-split plans are available too. For repair details, see our heat pump and mini-split repair page.
A new system doesn't have to come out of savings. We offer monthly financing on new systems and larger repairs, and qualifying high-efficiency heat pump systems may be eligible for utility rebates. Ask us about your options, or see our financing and rebates page.
How much does a mini-split cost in Austin?
It depends on the number of indoor units, the capacity you need, the equipment you choose and the complexity of the installation, such as line set length and electrical work. We give you a firm price before any work begins, and financing is available.
Can a mini-split heat my room in winter?
Yes. A mini-split is a heat pump, so it heats as well as cools, and modern units heat well through typical Central Texas winters. We'll size the system for your room and tell you if backup heat makes sense.
How many indoor units do I need?
Usually one indoor unit per room or open area. A multi-zone outdoor unit can serve several indoor units. A load calculation tells us what each space needs, so you don't pay for more than you need.
How often does a mini-split need maintenance?
Clean the filters regularly, often every month or two when the system is working hard, and have the coils, blower and drain line checked once a year, ideally before cooling season.
Do you repair mini-splits you didn't install?
Yes. We repair ductless mini-splits from major brands, whoever installed them.
