A Manual J load calculation tells us exactly how much heating and cooling your home needs, so your new system is sized to your house instead of a guess. Every replacement estimate includes a whole-house load calculation. When your ductwork is being redesigned, we go further with a full room-by-room Manual J ($250, credited toward your new system).

Manual J is the industry-standard method for calculating how much heating and cooling a specific home needs. It was developed by ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) and is the method building codes and many utility rebate programs commonly reference.
The result is a load, measured in BTUs per hour: the heat your home gains on the hottest day and loses on the coldest. That load is what we match your equipment to. It answers three questions:
For most system replacements where your existing ducts stay in place, we calculate the load for the whole house. That's what sizes the new equipment correctly. A room-by-room Manual J is done only when your ductwork is being redesigned, because that's when we need each room's load to size every duct run and register (ACCA's Manual D).
Manual J adds up every way heat enters or leaves your home, for the whole house or one room at a time when ducts are being redesigned. For any surface, such as a wall, ceiling or window, the heat moving through it follows one basic relationship:
Q = U × A × ΔT
Q is the heat flow in BTU per hour, U is how easily the surface conducts heat (the inverse of its insulation value), A is its area, and ΔT is the difference between indoor and outdoor design temperatures.
Manual J applies this to every surface, then adds the loads that don't come through the walls:
The software totals the heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, for the whole house or for each room, split into sensible heat (temperature) and latent heat (humidity). The sum is the load your equipment has to meet.
A Manual J is only as accurate as the information that goes into it. A real one can't be done from square footage alone. Doing it right takes:
The common shortcut is a rule of thumb, such as a set number of square feet per ton. Rules of thumb ignore insulation, windows, sun exposure and ducts, and they usually lead to oversized equipment (see why a bigger system isn't better). The Manual J result also feeds the next steps in ACCA's process: Manual S for choosing equipment and Manual D for designing ducts.
An oversized or undersized system is one of the most common reasons a new system disappoints. A Manual J helps you avoid that:
The whole-house load calculation is included in every free replacement estimate. A full room-by-room Manual J, done when your ductwork is being redesigned, has a $250 fee. You can use it either of two ways:
Manual J is published by ACCA, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America. You can read more about the standard on ACCA's Manual J page. Ready to get started? Call us to schedule your Manual J load calculation.
Can't you just size my system by square footage?
Square footage rules of thumb ignore insulation, windows, sun exposure, air leakage and ductwork. Two homes of the same size can need very different systems. A Manual J measures those things, so the system matches your home.
What's the difference between Manual J, Manual S and Manual D?
They're three steps in ACCA's design process. Manual J calculates how much heating and cooling your home needs, Manual S uses that to choose the right equipment, and Manual D designs the ductwork to deliver the right airflow to each room.
How much does a Manual J cost?
A whole-house load calculation is included in every free replacement estimate. A room-by-room Manual J, done when your ductwork is being redesigned, is $250. The completed calculation is yours to keep either way, and if you buy a new system from us, the $250 is credited toward the purchase.
Do I need a new calculation if I'm only replacing my old system?
Every replacement estimate includes a whole-house load calculation, so the new system is sized to your home as it is today, not copied from the old unit's label. A room-by-room Manual J is added when the ductwork is being redesigned.
Is an oversized system really a problem?
Yes. An oversized system cools the air quickly and shuts off before it removes enough moisture, which leaves the house cool but clammy, a real issue in Austin. The constant starting and stopping also wastes energy and wears out parts sooner.
