The compressor is the heart of your AC

The compressor sits inside the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant through the whole system. When it fails, your AC or heat pump can't cool or heat at all. It's also the most expensive part of the system, so getting the diagnosis right matters.

Plenty of “dead compressors” turn out to be a failed capacitor, contactor or wiring problem that costs a fraction as much to fix. Kassa Kool is engineer-owned, and we test the compressor and its electrical parts before recommending a replacement.

Signs of a compressor problem

  • The outdoor unit hums or clicks but the compressor doesn't start
  • The outdoor fan runs but the air inside isn't cold
  • The breaker trips when the AC tries to start
  • Loud grinding, knocking or rattling from the outdoor unit
  • The system short cycles, turning on and off every few minutes
  • Higher electric bills with less cooling

Before you approve a compressor replacement

Ask whether the capacitor, contactor and wiring were tested first, and how the compressor itself was tested. A proper diagnosis checks the windings, the amp draw and the insulation, not just whether the unit hums.

Why AC compressors fail

Overheating

Dirty outdoor coils, blocked airflow and 100°F afternoons make compressors run hot. Heat breaks down the oil and the motor windings over time.

Wrong refrigerant charge

Too little refrigerant starves the compressor of cooling, and too much can send liquid back into it. Both shorten its life. Charging by measurement prevents this.

Electrical problems

A weak capacitor, pitted contactor or loose connection makes the compressor struggle every time it starts, which wears it out early.

Lack of maintenance

Many compressor failures we see trace back to years without a tune-up: dirty coils, a failing capacitor nobody caught, or a slow leak left unchecked.

Age and wear

Compressors in Austin run long hours for most of the year. On an older system, a failed compressor is often a sign the rest of the system is near the end too.

How we test a compressor

We check the capacitor, contactor and wiring first, then test the compressor windings, amp draw and insulation resistance. You get the readings and a clear explanation before you decide.

Bogdan lives in my neighborhood so when I noticed that my AC wasn't cooling as well as it used to I gave him a call. He was able to come out and diagnose my issue as a leaking evaporator coil within a day and he recharged to keep it going. Also he followed up on my Trane warranty to get the coil replaced which was done the following week. The part was covered under warranty but I did have to cover the cost for the refrigerant and labor. Overall I'm happy with the service and I'll go with Kassa Kool again if I have any issues in the future !

Had a noise issue with my newly installed AC (by a different company) which they were not able to fix or even to diagnose and insisted that’s how it’s supposed to sound. There is no way I could live with that , so I reached out to Kassa Kool who was quick to respond and fix the problem. Owner is very knowledgeable and was able to address the problem on my Trane unit in the same visit. Reasonably priced, I will become their maintenance customer from now on.

What's included in a compressor replacement

  • A confirmed diagnosis before any parts are ordered
  • Refrigerant recovered to EPA rules
  • A new compressor matched to your system
  • A new capacitor, contactor and filter-drier
  • Brazing under nitrogen
  • A pressure test and deep vacuum before charging
  • Charging by measurement and a full test of the system
  • Warranty paperwork if the compressor is covered

Many manufacturers cover compressors with a long parts warranty on registered systems. We check your model and serial numbers and handle the claim if yours qualifies. Labor is usually not covered by the manufacturer.

How a compressor replacement works

  1. Diagnosis. We test the compressor and everything around it.
  2. Options and a firm price. A compressor replacement or a new system, with costs and warranty details for each.
  3. Parts. We order the correct compressor, or a warranty replacement if you qualify.
  4. Replacement. Most compressor replacements are done in one day once the part arrives, followed by a full system test.

Replace the compressor or the whole system?

A compressor replacement usually makes sense when the system is fairly new and the compressor is still under warranty. If the system is out of warranty, 12 or more years old or uses R-22 refrigerant, a new high-efficiency system often costs only a bit more and comes with a new warranty. We'll show you both. See AC replacement and 0% financing.

Protect your compressor

Clean coils, a healthy capacitor and the right refrigerant charge are what keep a compressor alive. Our maintenance plan checks all three twice a year for $16.67 a month, plus 10% off repairs.

Compressor replacement FAQ

How much does AC compressor replacement cost in Austin?

It depends on the system size, refrigerant type and whether the compressor is under warranty. Because it's a major repair, we always price it next to a new system so you can compare. You get a firm written price before any work begins.

Is it worth replacing just the compressor?

Often yes on a newer system, especially under warranty. On an older system, a new AC or heat pump is usually the better long-term value. We'll give you a straight answer based on your system.

My AC hums but won't start. Is the compressor dead?

Not necessarily. A failed capacitor or contactor causes the same symptoms and is a much smaller repair. Turn the system off to protect the compressor and call us for a diagnosis.

How long does a compressor replacement take?

Most are finished in one day once the compressor is in hand. Warranty parts can take a few days to arrive.

Do you replace compressors on heat pumps too?

Yes. We replace compressors on central air conditioners and heat pumps from all major brands.
