Honest heating repair for Austin homes

Austin doesn't get many hard freezes, but when one hits, a furnace that won't start turns into an emergency fast. Most heating systems here sit unused for much of the year, so problems often show up on the first cold night of the season.

Kassa Kool is engineer-owned. We test ignition, gas pressure, flame sensors, safety switches and electrical readings instead of guessing, then repair what's actually broken. We work on gas furnaces, electric furnaces, heat strips and heat pumps from all major brands.

Signs your furnace needs repair

  • Cold or lukewarm air when the heat is on
  • The furnace starts, then shuts off after a few minutes
  • Clicking, banging, squealing or rumbling noises
  • A burning smell that lasts more than the first few minutes of the season
  • The thermostat calls for heat but nothing happens
  • A yellow or flickering burner flame instead of a steady blue one
  • Gas or electric bills climbing for no clear reason

Smell gas or hear your CO alarm?

Get everyone outside right away. Don't flip light switches or use anything that could spark. From outside, call Texas Gas Service or 911. Once everyone is safe, call us and we'll find and fix the problem.

Common furnace problems we fix

Dirty or failed flame sensors

A flame sensor coated with residue makes the furnace light and then shut off within seconds. Cleaning or replacing it is one of the most common winter repairs.

Igniter failures

Hot surface igniters crack with age. When one fails, the furnace runs its inducer fan and tries to start, but the burners never light.

Pressure switch and venting problems

A blocked vent, a cracked hose or a weak inducer motor trips the pressure switch and keeps the furnace from lighting. We find the cause instead of bypassing the safety.

Blower motor and capacitor failures

The same blower moves air for heating and cooling. A weak motor or capacitor means poor airflow, short cycling and rooms that never warm up.

Heat strips and heat pump defrost problems

Many Austin homes heat with a heat pump and backup electric heat strips. Burned-out strips, a failed sequencer or a heat pump stuck in defrost all leave you cold.

Thermostat and wiring problems

Dead batteries, settings lost after a power outage and loose low-voltage wires cause more no-heat calls than you'd think. We check these first.

No heat? Call us and we'll get it running.

Bogdan lives in my neighborhood so when I noticed that my AC wasn't cooling as well as it used to I gave him a call. He was able to come out and diagnose my issue as a leaking evaporator coil within a day and he recharged to keep it going. Also he followed up on my Trane warranty to get the coil replaced which was done the following week. The part was covered under warranty but I did have to cover the cost for the refrigerant and labor. Overall I'm happy with the service and I'll go with Kassa Kool again if I have any issues in the future !

Had a noise issue with my newly installed AC (by a different company) which they were not able to fix or even to diagnose and insisted that’s how it’s supposed to sound. There is no way I could live with that , so I reached out to Kassa Kool who was quick to respond and fix the problem. Owner is very knowledgeable and was able to address the problem on my Trane unit in the same visit. Reasonably priced, I will become their maintenance customer from now on.

Before you call: quick checks

  • Set the thermostat to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature
  • Replace the thermostat batteries if the screen is blank
  • Check the breakers for the furnace and the outdoor unit
  • Make sure the furnace power switch, which looks like a light switch near the unit, is on
  • Replace a dirty air filter
  • Make sure the furnace door panel is closed tight. Most furnaces won't run with it open.

Never bypass a safety switch or work on gas lines or wiring inside a furnace. If these checks don't fix it, turn the system off and call us.

How a heating repair visit works

  1. Call or book online. Tell us what the furnace is doing, or not doing.
  2. We diagnose. We test the ignition sequence, gas pressure, safety switches, airflow and electrical parts.
  3. You get a firm price. We explain what we found and what it costs before any work begins.
  4. We repair and test. We run the system through full heating cycles and check for carbon monoxide before we leave.

Should you repair or replace your furnace?

Furnaces in Austin often last a long time because they run so little each year, so a repair is usually the smart choice. We recommend replacement only when there's a safety problem that can't be fixed, such as a cracked heat exchanger, or when the repair cost doesn't make sense for the system's age. If it comes to that, see AC and heating replacement and financing options.

Keep your heat ready for winter

Our maintenance plan includes a fall heating tune-up and a spring AC tune-up for $16.67 a month, plus priority scheduling and 10% off repairs.

Furnace repair FAQ

How much does furnace repair cost in Austin?

It depends on what failed. Common repairs like a flame sensor, igniter or capacitor are usually affordable. We charge a trip and diagnostic fee, which can be waived for certain repairs, and you get a firm price before any work begins.

Why does my furnace turn on and then shut off?

Most often it's a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter, or a venting or pressure switch problem. These are safety shutoffs, so the furnace is protecting itself. We find the cause and fix it properly.

Is a burning smell from my furnace normal?

A dusty smell for the first few minutes of the season is normal. A smell that lingers, smells electrical or smells like rotten eggs is not. If you smell gas, leave the house and call Texas Gas Service or 911 from outside.

Do you repair heat pumps and electric heat?

Yes. We repair gas furnaces, electric furnaces, heat strips and heat pumps, including ductless mini-splits, from all major brands.

Can you come after hours?

Our regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and after-hours visits are available by appointment. Maintenance plan members get priority scheduling.

No heat? Let's get it fixed.
