Is it time to replace your AC?

We repair first whenever it makes sense. But in Central Texas, where an AC can run 10 to 12 hours a day from May through September, even a good system wears out. These are the signs that replacement is usually the better use of your money:

  • The system is 12 to 15 years old or more
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced and is expensive to recharge
  • It needs a compressor or indoor coil, the two most expensive parts
  • You've paid for several repairs in the last two years
  • Your electric bills keep climbing even though your habits haven't changed
  • Rooms are uneven or the house feels clammy even when the AC runs

A quick rule of thumb: multiply the repair price by the system's age in years. If the result is over about $5,000, replacement tends to pay off. Not sure? We'll give you both a repair price and a replacement price, and our AC repair team never pushes a replacement you don't need. We also offer free second opinions on other companies' quotes.

What's included in every Kassa Kool installation

The equipment matters, but the installation matters more. A top-rated system installed poorly will underperform a mid-range system installed well. Every replacement we do includes:

  • A Manual J load calculation to size the system for your home, not copied from the old unit's label
  • Matched equipment: a new outdoor unit, indoor coil and furnace or air handler designed to work together
  • New or cleaned refrigerant lines, brazed under nitrogen, pressure-tested and evacuated to a deep vacuum before charging
  • A ductwork check, with sealing and repairs where needed
  • A new pad, electrical disconnect and drain line, plus a float switch to protect your ceiling from overflows
  • A new thermostat, set up and explained
  • City permits and inspections where required
  • Removal of your old equipment, with refrigerant recovered to EPA rules
  • A full startup test and a walkthrough, plus manufacturer warranty registration and a 1-year Kassa Kool labor warranty, with extended labor coverage of up to 10 years available

Bogdan lives in my neighborhood so when I noticed that my AC wasn't cooling as well as it used to I gave him a call. He was able to come out and diagnose my issue as a leaking evaporator coil within a day and he recharged to keep it going. Also he followed up on my Trane warranty to get the coil replaced which was done the following week. The part was covered under warranty but I did have to cover the cost for the refrigerant and labor. Overall I'm happy with the service and I'll go with Kassa Kool again if I have any issues in the future !

Had a noise issue with my newly installed AC (by a different company) which they were not able to fix or even to diagnose and insisted that’s how it’s supposed to sound. There is no way I could live with that , so I reached out to Kassa Kool who was quick to respond and fix the problem. Owner is very knowledgeable and was able to address the problem on my Trane unit in the same visit. Reasonably priced, I will become their maintenance customer from now on.

Choosing the right system

We'll walk you through two or three options with clear prices, so you can choose what fits your home and budget.

Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed

A single-stage system runs at full power or not at all, and costs the least up front. A two-stage system runs on low most of the time, which is quieter and removes more humidity. A variable-speed (inverter) system adjusts continuously, giving the most even temperatures, the quietest operation and the lowest electric bills. In a long Austin cooling season, the higher-efficiency options often pay back part of their cost.

AC with a gas furnace, or a heat pump

If your home has a gas furnace in good shape, you can replace just the AC side and keep it. If the furnace is old too, you can replace both together, or switch to a heat pump, which heats and cools with one outdoor unit and works well through a Central Texas winter.

The right size, not the biggest size

Bigger isn't better. An oversized AC cools the house fast, shuts off before it removes moisture, and leaves rooms feeling cold and clammy. It also wears out sooner from starting and stopping. The load calculation tells us exactly what your home needs.

How the replacement process works

  1. Free in-home estimate. We inspect your current system and ducts and run the load calculation.
  2. A clear written quote. Two or three options with prices, efficiency ratings and warranties side by side.
  3. Scheduling. Most replacements are scheduled within 2 to 3 days, depending on demand, and take one day to install.
  4. Installation. We protect your floors, remove the old equipment and install the new system.
  5. Testing and walkthrough. We test the system, show you how to use the thermostat and register your warranty.
  6. Rebate paperwork. If you qualify for a utility rebate, we help you file it.

How much does AC replacement cost in Austin?

Every home is different, so we give you a firm price after the in-home estimate. The main things that affect cost are:

  • System size, measured in tons, based on your load calculation
  • Efficiency level, from standard to variable-speed
  • AC only, or AC plus furnace or heat pump
  • Ductwork condition and whether repairs are needed
  • Access, such as tight attics or long refrigerant runs
Most full-system replacements in the Austin area fall between $8,000 and $13,000. Use the calculator below to estimate a monthly payment.

AC replacement FAQ

How long does an AC replacement take?

Most full-system replacements take one day. If ductwork needs major repairs or the install involves a hard-to-reach attic, it can take a second day. We'll tell you before we start.

Do I need to replace my furnace when I replace my AC?

Not always. If your furnace is in good shape and compatible with the new coil, you can keep it. If it's 15 to 20 years old, replacing both together is often cheaper than doing them separately later. We'll show you both options.

What size AC does my house need?

It depends on your home's insulation, windows, orientation, ductwork and more, not just square footage. We run a Manual J load calculation during the estimate to size the system correctly.

Should I get a heat pump instead of an AC?

If you're replacing both your AC and furnace, or your home is already all-electric, a heat pump is often a smart choice for Central Texas. If you have a newer gas furnace, pairing it with a new AC can make more sense.

Do you pull permits?

Yes. We pull city permits and schedule inspections where they're required, and the cost is included in your quote.

Can I finance a new AC?

Yes. We offer 0% same-as-cash financing for 25 months with approved credit through Service Finance Company, and you can apply online on this page.
