To Fix or not to fix

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to simply replace an old appliance when it starts to malfunction. However, there is a certain philosophy and virtue in taking the time to repair and restore an aging appliance. While buying a new model may seem like the simpler option, fixing an old one can be a rewarding experience that saves money and reduces waste.

When an HVAC breaks down, many contra tors are often quick to deem it obsolete and recommend a replacement. But before making that decision, it’s worth considering the environmental and financial benefits of repair. Fixing an old HVAC system keeps it out of the landfill and conserves the resources that went into manufacturing a new one.

What is essential is that you owe yourself a second opinion. Have seen systems condemned just because of a bad diagnostic. Give Kassa Kool HVAC a call for a free second opinion.

Beyond the practical advantages, there is a sense of accomplishment that comes with resurrecting an aging appliance. The process of diagnosing the issue, sourcing the right parts, and successfully completing the repair can be immensely satisfying. It connects us to a bygone era when things were built to last and people took pride in maintaining their possessions.

However, a thing to keep in mind is that an old HVAC equipment once fixed, it may show it’s age and go bad in a different place, anytime. This will require a new visit, new hours or days enduring heat or cold, and  more money put into it. Money which you, the homeowner will never get back.

Newer R410A refrigerant units, run at much higher pressures (about 3x) versus an old R22 system. Metals are thinner for cost saving and for performance efficiency reasons. So newer units have a good chance of lasting shorter if not properly manufactured, designed and installed..

For comparison, your car tires have 32 PSIG or so. The HVAC system can run at pressures of 400PSIG sometimes more. That is at least 10x the pressure in your car tires.

Many have asked how long shall a HVAC system last. The answer is it depends: How well it was manufactured, how well was maintained and installed. I’ve seen a fair share of well known brands with multiple refrigerant leaks at 10 years mark or much sooner. Majority cannot be repaired properly are not something we will trust moving forward after repair, nor the homeowner.

Ultimately, the choice between fixing an old appliance or buying a new one comes down to you. We will present you with both options, pros, cons and price for each.
